Steven C.M. Hasstedt

Steve Hasstedt, the Academy’s 97th Permanent Professor, was born in Denver, Colorado, in 1970, a third-generation Colorado native. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the United States Air Force Academy with the Class of 1992. In his career he has served in numerous operational logistics assignments, beginning as Commander of Vehicle Operations and then the Combat Readiness and Resources Flight responsible for wing deployments at Luke AFB, AZ. In 1995 Steve was assigned to Charleston AFB, SC, where he held Flight Commander positions in the 437th Aerial Port Squadron, refining deployment, cargo, and aerial delivery operations with the C-17 initial cadre before being selected as the 437th Operations Group Executive Officer. From 1998 to 2000 he was Chief of the Cargo Operations Section, Directorate of Operations, Air Mobility Command, Scott AFB, IL, and in 2000 was recognized as the joint National Defense Transportation Association Junior Executive of the Year. He next attended Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, in preparation for a faculty assignment, and earned his Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences at the end of 2001. He joined the Academy’s Department of Biology for the Spring 2002 semester, and over the next five semesters taught a variety of courses and served as the Academic Advisor in Charge for cadets in the Biology major. From 2004 to 2005 he was a student in the Advanced Study of Air Mobility program at the Air Mobility Warfare Center, Fort Dix, NJ. This in-residence program culminated in a second Master of Science degree in Air Mobility/Logistics from the School of Engineering and Management, Air Force Institute of Technology. He was the first non-rated Commander of Detachment 1, 715th Air Mobility Operations Group, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory, 2005–2006, where he served as the primary advisor to the US Navy and British commanders on mobility operations. Steve then served at US Joint Forces Command, Joint Concept Development and Experimentation, Suffolk, VA, from 2006 to 2009. He led a multinational logistics working group consisting of personnel from NATO, the US Joint Staff, US Transportation Command, and 13 other nations focused on improving coalition logistics and developing a multinational guide to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations. This was followed by his second command, at Lajes Air Base, Azores, Portugal, 2009–2010, where he led the 729th Air Mobility Squadron to honors as Air Mobility Command’s Small Air Terminal Unit of the Year for 2009. Steve returned stateside in 2010 to pursue his doctorate at Colorado State University, Fort Collins. He earned his PhD in Ecology from CSU in 2013 and returned to the Department of Biology as Assistant Professor and Director of Curriculum Integration. In 2014 he was assigned as the Dean’s Director of Staff and was serving in that position when selected in 2016 as Permanent Professor and Head, Department of Biology. Steve’s goal is to sustain the elite faculty community of Air Force professionals and biologists developing the ability to apply critical thinking and scientific reasoning/problem-solving skills in graduates who serve in the medical and health professions, as rated officers, and in many other Air Force careers.
